Shortly about the rapeseed again (autumn weed control)
We heard about the catastrophic consequences of the tremendous amount of rain in August. These lines are written at the time of top level of the flood running down on the Danube when despite the four-days holiday thousands are working on the dams. But the huge quantity of rain has advantages, too. The soil conditions have not been so good for long concerning rapeseed sowing. The rainy season coming one month earlier than usual has raised hope in the rapeseed growers.
In the last autumn issue of the IKR Magazine we fully discussed the autumn weed control and the growth regulation of rapeseed vegetation. We summarised in a chart the possible pesticides and their combinations. For this reason we neglect their review here. However we have to raise attention for the fact that the wet soil is favourable not only for the rapeseed but also for the weed, especially in the hybrid rapeseed that requires sparsely sowing. Yet the optimal moisture content of the soil increases the effectiveness of the pre-sowing and pre-emergent herbicides.
In normal cases and seasons we offer this treatment for the traditional rapeseed growing regions for farmers growing rapeseed not for the first time and aiming for a yield above 2 t/ha because the poorly grown vegetation may by destroyed by winter frost and the investment is wasted. The pre-sowing and pre-emergent treatment can not spread widely in Hungary because of the risk of winter frost and the post-ploughing, however it would be necessary to terminate the weed vegetation in the beginning.
In a season better than the average the basic treatment could be safe even for those who were afraid to apply it because of the reasons listed above. Of course, these dialectics can be valid only in generally. Concerning specific conditions everyone has to decide at his own risk.
